I walked out the door without my phone.

About thirty minutes out of town, I panicked. How was anyone going to get a hold of me? What if I missed my turn? Where am I going to eat?

I turned around, but by the time I made it home, I knew I had a problem. Just a few years before, I rarely had my phone with me and if I did, it wasn't seen as the ultimate trip companion.
I looked deeper into my life and I realized that the creative work, deep connections, and rich, soulful, emotionally fulfilling life that I longed for seemed stuck in distraction and chronic dissatisfaction.
Parents in my life seemed the most distraught. They were stuck with the need for connection, along with seeing how technology sucked in their kids and never seemed to let go. How could they be good examples to their kids when they had their faces stuck in screens too?
I had this sense that something wasn't right. I'd taken digital detoxes and sabbaticals and done every tip and trick to be more productive and focused, but nothing stuck. The social media apps crept back on my screens.
All the tips and tricks that I tried worked for a bit and then stopped. The call of technology was so strong that I felt like I wasn't in control. I realized it's not what to do but how to do it that makes permanent lifelong change possible.
